Two pools three miles apart, the same size, filled from the same tap, can need genuinely different weeks. Most people assume that comes down to the water. Usually it comes down to what lands in it.

We service pools from Trinity across to Lake Magdalene and up into Keystone, and the single biggest difference between one town and the next is not chemistry. It is debris: how much arrives, what kind it is, and whether anything is stopping it.

Cypress is not oak, and a filter knows the difference

Florida lakeside wetland is cypress. Cypress drops needles rather than leaves, and that changes almost everything about how a pool handles it.

Needles are fine enough to pass a skimmer basket that would stop an oak leaf. So instead of being caught where you can lift them out, they travel on and load the filter. A pool beside cypress often has a clean-looking surface and a filter working far harder than its owner realises.

They fall over months, not weeks. Oaks flush heavily in spring and are largely done. Cypress comes down through autumn and into winter, so it is a season-long condition rather than a fortnight of extra netting.

And they stain. Needle tannin leaches a tea colour into the water and settles into any surface that has lost its polish. Cosmetic rather than unsafe — but far easier to stay ahead of weekly than to correct after it has sat.

How much cypress sits within a couple of miles of the middle of town varies enormously across the area we cover:

East Lake — 8.6 km², the most of anywhere we service.

Cheval — 4.8 km², and thirteen miles from the coast.

Keystone — 4.3 km², threaded between six named lakes.

Northdale — 3.1 km², six small lakes through the town.

Trinity — 2.8 km², with Lake Dan at the centre.

Citrus Park — 1.9 km², four small lakes.

Carrollwood — 1.4 km², oak canopy matters more here.

Lake Magdalene — 0.2 km², effectively none — this is oak country.

Oak country behaves differently

Lake Magdalene is the exception that makes the point. It is named for its lake and has five more beside it, yet there is barely fifty acres of wetland nearby — the least of anywhere we service. It is oak country.

That means a heavy spring flush rather than a slow winter drop, leaves that a skimmer will actually catch, and organic load that arrives in a burst you can plan around instead of a trickle you cannot.

Neither is worse. They are different jobs, and a company that runs the same routine in both is getting one of them wrong.

The screen cage decides less than people think

Almost every pool company quotes an enclosure figure as though it settles the matter. It does not, and looking at the aerial imagery across our territory made that obvious: plenty of uncaged pools sit under almost no tree cover at all, and they are among the easiest pools in the region to keep right.

A cage is one of two things setting debris load. The canopy above is the other. Read either alone and you will reach the wrong conclusion:

Which is why we would rather look at your pool than at your postcode. An uncaged pool with open sky above it is not a problem to be solved. A caged pool under forty-year-old oaks still takes pollen, fine litter and dust straight through the mesh, and it needs more attention than its cage suggests.

Caged, sparse canopy. The easiest pool in the territory. Very little reaches the water and what does is caught.

Caged, mature canopy. The screen stops leaves but not pollen, fine litter or dust. More work than the cage implies.

Uncaged, sparse canopy. Genuinely fine, and common in the aerial imagery across this area. Not a problem to be solved.

Uncaged, mature canopy. The hardest combination: constant load and high chlorine demand. This is the one worth attention.

If you back onto water, you have a third factor

Waterfowl droppings carry phosphate and bacteria, and the chlorine demand behind them is real rather than theoretical. Midges hatch off Florida lakes in numbers that startle people who have not lived beside one, swarm, die on surfaces and rot. Wind carries organic load off the water on top of that.

All of it is true for homes on or near the water, and none of it is true for a home half a mile inland. A page that tells you otherwise is describing an average rather than your pool.

Two more local factors worth knowing

Golf. Fertiliser and reclaimed irrigation carry phosphate, phosphate feeds algae, and a pool downhill of a fairway sees more of it than one that is not. In Lake Magdalene close to three in ten of the town's pools sit in a single country-club community — the highest concentration anywhere we work.

Construction. In Odessa roughly two pools in five are in a community still being built. Stucco and concrete fines are alkaline, so they push pH up, and the sand and silt go straight into the filter. It is not a season like leaf fall — it runs until the last lot on the street closes, and it is worst when the wind comes off the active side of the development.

What this means where you live

Pool service in Citrus Park — middle-aged pools where the equipment ages faster than the surface.

Pool service in Cheval — the most cypress of the Hillsborough towns, and far enough inland that salt is not a factor.

So what should you actually do?

Find out which of these apply to you, not to your town. Two of them together — cypress overhead and a lake at the bottom of the garden — is a different proposition from either alone.

Take the debris out before it does its work. Every leaf and needle that sinks and breaks down consumes chlorine. Adding more chlorine treats the symptom; taking the litter out weekly treats the cause, and costs less.

Watch the filter, not just the water. In cypress country the surface can look fine while the filter is struggling. Pressure creeping up is the tell.

And do not read the cage as the whole answer. It is half of one.
